He says that he’s sorry now, but does he really mean it? Even though Justin Timberlake released a public statement saying that he was sorry for the way that he dismissed and perhaps even disrespected both his ex Britney Spears and Janet Jackson in the past, there’s a new report that says the hit maker also dismissed a reporter who once asked him to specifically apologize to Janet. Here’s what you need to know.
While a lot of people are talking about how Justin did Britney wrong in the new documentary, Framing Britney Spears, let’s not forget how he has also gotten a lot of criticism for his performance with Janet Jackson at the 2004 Super Bowl. After Janet’s wardrobe malfunction, it was his actions or maybe even the lack thereof that contributed largely to Janet’s public scrutiny.
Justin Timberlake’s Past Is Coming Back To Haunt Him
And now there’s a report that says Journalist Ernest Owens dug into his Twitter archives for an exchange that he had with Justin in which he accused the singer of appropriating black music and telling him to “apologize to Janet, too” after Timberlake praised actor Jesse William’s 2016 BET Awards speech.
Ernest Owens tweeted to Justin, “So does this mean you’re going to stop appropriating our music and culture? And apologize to Janet too. #BETAwards.”
Justin then responded, “Oh, you sweet soul. The more you realize that we are the same, the more we can have a conversation. Bye.”
The former N’Sync star later tweeted, ““I feel misunderstood. I responded to a specific tweet that wasn’t meant to be a general response. I shouldn’t have responded anyway…,” and also addressed the exchange in an interview with Zane Lowe saying, “I felt terrible, you feel terrible … like, ‘Oh man, that is not what I meant. Why did I do that?’”
In his apology to Britney and Janet, he said, “I’ve seen the messages, tags, comments, and concerns and I want to respond. I am deeply sorry for the times in my life where my actions contributed to the problem, where I spoke out of turn, or did not speak up for what was right. I understand that I fell short in these moments and in many others and benefited from a system that condones misogyny and racism.”
