HBO Max’s ‘Mortal Kombat’ Character Comparison’s To The Original Films

HBO Max’s ‘Mortal Kombat’ trailer took everyone by storm yesterday. This is the type of film fans have been waiting for. Produced by horror-icon James Wan, the trailer didn’t hold back from the gore, violence, and cursing. Plus, it showcased plenty of classic ‘Mortal Kombat’ characters, including Kung Lao, Liu Kang, and, of course, Scorpion.

We thought it’d be interesting to do side-by-side comparisons of some of the most notable characters (and those who actually appeared in both, sorry Kung Lao) and see the improvements they’ve made over the years.

Sub-Zero

Sub-Zero is a stable of the ‘Mortal Kombat’ universe and we got to see him unleash his full potential in the trailer with a short clip of an epic battle between himself and Scorpion! Portrayed this time by Martial Artist Joe Taslim (The Raid: Redemption) we can expect some amazing “Kombat” in the film.

Scorpion

Get over here! Everyone got chills when we heard that line. This time around, his armor is much more based on the newest iterations of games, like ‘Mortal Kombat X’ with his pauldrons and armor. He also won’t have the grapples coming out of his hands this time around but instead using the kyoketsu-shoge (a double-edged blade at the end of a 10-18 foot rope or chain).

Sonya Blade

No more Veronica Vaughn. We don’t see too much of Sonya in the trailer, but actress Jessica McNamee definitely looks the part! I look forward to seeing her become a central part of the film and hopefully, we’ll get to see some of her special moves this time around!

Lord Raiden

‘Battleship’ and ‘Thor’ star Asano Tadanobu will be portraying the God of Lightning. As with Shang Tsung, we only saw glimpses of this hero, but hopefully, we’ll get an epic showdown between the two! I want to see a lot of lightning and spins.

Jax

While Jax wasn’t in the original 1995 film, he did make an appearance in the sequel, ‘Mortal Kombat: Annihilation’. He was a bright spot in an otherwise terrible film. This time around, we’ll be getting a lot more CGI for the arms rather than prosthetics and I hope it turns out well. Good luck Jax!

Shang Tsung

The evil host of the tournament and powerful warlock who consumes souls makes a powerful appearance in the trailer! Taking over the role from the legendary Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Chin Han will have some large shoes to fill!

Goro

From practical to CGI… we hope this turns out well. We know how fickle CGI can be. Goro makes a short appearance in the new trailer as he leaps at some unknown combatant.

Kano

Everyone’s favorite villain of the franchise. Kano is a smart mouth with a laser eye and we get to see it in full effect in the trailer! In 1995’s ‘Mortal Kombat’ we never see him use this ability, probably due to the lack of CGI abilities. I look forward to seeing this character brought to life again!

Liu Kang

Remember in 1995 when Liu Kang used his powerful abilities once to knock Shang Tsung into the spike pit for like, 2 seconds? Don’t worry, we’ll be getting plenty of his abilities in this film as he seemingly uses them at every turn. It’s a shame, I miss Robin Shou and had hoped he’d return to this film in the role of Shang Tsung or at least a cameo!

Johnny Cage?

#Where’sJohnny right? One of the franchises’ most popular characters is seemingly missing from the trailer! We hope that we’ll at least hear something about him and why he isn’t in the film! Let’s hope we get our favorite martial art actors in soon and he can fly through the air with his powerful kicks. The world is a better place with Johnny Cage in it.

HBO Max’s ‘Mortal Kombat’ is set to release in theaters as well as streaming on April 16th! You won’t want to miss this newest iteration of the video games and hopefully, this will make way for a sequel or HBO series! This last time I was this excited about a ‘Mortal Kombat’ series/film was back in 2011 with the ‘Mortal Kombat: Legacy’ show!

If you haven’t seen it, I would recommend the watch. After you rewatch the original 1995 film, and you still have a need for more before this releases, give it a stream. This trailer reminds me of the series quite a bit.
