2020 has been a tough year and many companies have really started to suffer through it. Even TV shows have started to suffer and one show in particular is the Ellen DeGeneres Show.
About two months ago, there were allegations against Ellen about having a toxic work environment and sexual harassment charges. The show has started to lose advertisers and there are celebrities that have refused to be on the show. Things are not looking up for the show and many of Ellen’s employees have started to open up.
Employees Are Concerned
For the employees that have stayed on and continued to help Ellen on the show, they have noticed a lot of changes. They haven’t been able to make a lot of new content because they haven’t been given the go on any new stories.
The staff has admitted that they have been reusing a lot of the older footage that they have because no one wants to be on the show anymore, especially with these allegations swirling around. One staff member said, “We’re trying to be a content house, but we have no content.”
Ellen DeGeneres Makes Employees Speak Out
If we look back on November of 2019, they had about 12 different sponsors on Instagram. In November of 2020, there seem to be only two sponsors on their Instagram account.
Generally for the Ellen Show, the month of December is the busiest and the most exciting. The show airs “12 Days of Giveaways” on 12 different episodes. This is when they promote different brands and these brands are generally sponsors of the show.
A staff member opened up about the 12 days, “In a typical year, ’12 Days of Giveaways’ is huge. We’ve basically claimed Christmas on daytime TV. When you think of Christmas on TV, you think of The Ellen Show. Everyone wants to be in the audience. Everyone wants the gifts. And so we line up all these crazy sponsors, and people love it. But this year, our ’12 Days’ is more condensed. We don’t have as many sponsors.”
The staff member continued, “This feels like our make-it-ot-break-it moment. This will be our biggest report card. If we pick up sponsors by the new year, then we’re cooking, we’ll be fine, and we’ll sell kindness in a bottle. But if we fail that report card, who knows.”
Staff members have grown frustrated because there are so few guests that still want to appear on the show, especially with all of the sexual harassment allegations still floating around. For those who love the show, we hope that things calm down again soon and Ellen can show her fans just what the truth is.
