WWE fans were delighted to learn last night that Wade Barrett has signed a deal with NXT to continue on commentary duties for the foreseeable.
Barrett’s stock has risen since he left the WWE in 2016. He has starred in a number of films that have achieved commercial success, including I Am Vengeance and I Am Vengeance: Retaliation.
However, it’s no secret that fans have been pining for the superstar to return to the ring and have another match. Barrett hasn’t wrestled since leaving the company back in 2016, and has instead operated in an on-screen personality. Before NXT, he was last seen on World Of Sport in the United Kingdom.
WWE News: Barrett’s New Deal
There is certainly a fresh look about the announce team on NXT now, with Mauro Ranallo recently leaving the team to concentrate on other ventures. Barrett will be sitting alongside Vic Joseph and Beth Phoenix to call the action on the yellow brand.
Barrett revealed that he was excited with the new deal, and that he hopes that it runs beyond the 12-months that it has to run. However, fans are already questioning whether the contract could include Barrett potentially returning as an active superstar at some point in the near future.
There is more than a feeling that the superstar was underused during his initial run with the company, and there was an opportunity for the WWE to put the WWE Championship on him during his rivalry with John Cena.
WWE News: Could We See A Barrett Return?
Barrett’s career in WWE got off to a memorable start as he was part of The Nexus when they stormed Raw. That moment remains one of the most exciting in the company’s history, and it has already been muted that Barrett could have his hand in the Retribution angle that has been taking over Raw over the past couple of months.
Fans were quick to notice an interchange between Drew McIntyre and Barrett on social media after the announcement was made, with the current WWE Champion claiming that Barrett follows him everywhere.
There is no shortage of history between the two, with Barrett and McIntyre being part of a tag team back in FCW, as they won two tag team championships. It may be wishful thinking, but a title match between McIntyre and Barrett would certainly generate an awful lot of interest.
