TLC ‘Doubling Down With The Derricos’ Spoilers: It’s okay to not be okay

Little Dawsyn Derrico did get to come home, but only for a little while. Sometimes the best laid plans don’t often work out. Karen Derrico and Deon Derrico honestly tried with the tube feedings, but unfortunately, Dad was suffering from PTSD from losing their previous child, Carter, and Mom could not remember how to properly do the tube feeding.

So she ended up taking her back to the hospital and now they’re going to have to keep her until she’s off the tube, that’s what my guess is. I felt so bad for Karen because tube feeding is not an easy thing, even for an adult who’s taking care of another adult, it’s intimidating when you have to administer medical things like that.

Especially when its your child who’s fighting for their lives anyway. Baby Dawsyn has been through a lot and the last thing that Karen wanted to do was to potentially put her baby in danger. Also she said it looked like there was blood in the tube and that is never a good sign, that’s a sign of complications.

The doctors thanked her for bringing her back, and that they were going to take it from there. Still, the feeling of failure absolutely devastated Karen as she realized that her joyous occassion was rapidly coming to a close.

The next day the entire family gathered around to lament the re-hospitalization of Dawsyn. Karen felt like that, as a Mom, she should have this, and she felt judged by other people because she had 14 children but tube feeding was just something she couldn’t do. Before you judge her, please don’t.

Some of us are not cut out for complicated medical work, and in my experience feeding tubes are complicated and scary. Sometimes, it’s better to admit defeat and surrender the situation to an authority who knows what they’re doing (in this case, doctors at a hospital) than just trying to wing it.

So let’s have a round of applause for Karen because she knew when her baby girl needed help and she knew when it was beyond her expertise, she got her baby the help that she needed. Just for that alone, in my book at least, she is an excellent Mother.

Even in her time of trial, she said that she was glad that her children got to see her at one of her most vulnerable moments, not so they could be scared (because a few of the little ones were crying), but just to let them know that it’s okay to not feel okay 100% of the time and it’s okay to feel sad when you fail. It’s a hard lesson, but a good one.

I felt bad for Deon too, dealing with PTSD and literally blanking out entire bits of information. He was present at the tube feeding tutorial but obviously his mind was a million miles away and it’s pretty clear that he felt terrible about that. In next week’s preview he says something about having been different with Dawsyn than his other children, but it was never about a lack of love. We’ll see what this is referencing. Stay tuned!!!
