Ryan Reynolds is apologizing for his wedding. However, the Hollywood actor is not apologizing over the fact that he married his longtime sweetheart and fellow Hollywood star Blake Lively, but instead he’s apologizing for their choice of wedding location. The couple tied the knot back in 2012 at Boone Hall, a former slave plantation in South Carolina. Here’s what he has to say.

“It’s something we’ll always be deeply and unreservedly sorry for,” Reynolds, 43, told Fast Company in a recent interview. “It’s impossible to reconcile.”

And while Ryan does have his regrets over the wedding location (and certainly not the wedding itself), he did explain the couple’s decision to have an antebellum wedding at the time.

“What we saw at the time was a wedding venue on Pinterest. What we saw after was a place built upon devastating tragedy,” Reynolds admitted. Ryan also added that the couple secretly got married a second time in the comfort and privacy of their own home.

“Shame works in weird ways,” he said. “A giant f–king mistake like that can either cause you to shut down or it can reframe things and move you into action. It doesn’t mean you won’t f–k up again. But repatterning and challenging lifelong social conditioning is a job that doesn’t end.”

Meanwhile, reports have said that Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively have donated $1 million to the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund. The celebrity father has also launched The Group Effort Initiative, which is a program that is designed to bring “Black, Indigenous, people of color or people from marginalized and excluded communities” into the film industry.
