TikTok influencer Charli D’Amelio recently took a break from the platform after people simultaneously bodyshamed her for being too skinny and then too fat all in the same week. The majorly sad thing about all of this is the fact that she is 16 years old. She is not some hollywood actress who was allowed to grow up and have a career before the world started in on her, no she’s the same age as your average high school sophmore and people are already speculating about her body.
She took to Twitter to tell people that they weren’t allowed to talk about her body. My question is, what on earth were they talking about? The girl is not morbidly obese nor is she malnourished, she is, from the looks of it a very healthy, active 16 year old girl that likes to have fun on TikTok. Granted, I am way older than her target audience so perhaps I am not seeing what her demographic sees. But as a woman, this worries me, how can you be simultaneously shamed for a body type that you do not have? Some people are saying she’s too skinny and other people are saying that she’s gained weight but from what I can see she has neither and overweight or an underweight bodytype, so what are we doing now?
Youtuber Charli DiAmelio takes social media break after body shaming
Has it really come to “normal-shaming”, guys? When we see a girl who has a perfectly normal bodytype, who is not harming anyone, who just happens to wear tank tops and shirts to dance in (which are by the way, universally accepted dance and workout wear), has it come down to shaming a girl just for existing? Because it certainly sounds like it. What I don’t get is what this has even accomplished. If the object was to ruin a young girl’s self confidence then the internet can give itself a congratulatory pat on the back. Because that seems to be all that is being accomplished.
Some of these people are young themselves and may not realize the impact of what they’re doing. But not all of the commenters are kids, there is a portion that are adults and for the ones that are adults and do know better, then we should refrain from speaking on things that are sensitive to this young girl. If you re going to watch her content and she’s not hurting anyone else or being problematic in any other way then what is the big deal? She’s not promoting unhealthy lifestyles, she’s not posting ‘thinspo’ pictures or doing anything else, so I think we all need to take a step back and let the little girl dance. After all of this kerfuffle it is said that she has taken a break from her usual posting schedule on TikTok. Here’s hoping after all if this heat her online life can calm down a little. Stay tuned.
