Yike! Okay, I must admit, when I first saw the palette name ‘Cremated’ by Jeffree Star, my first thought was, “Okay, that makes sense. It’s Jeffree Star. That’s on-brand for him.” because for those of you who are unfamiliar, Jeffree got his start in the goth music industry on MySpace back in 2007. If any of you are familiar with goth culture, it can get dark, even the most humorous things in goth culture are often morose and would definitely be seen by someone who wasn’t in the subset as probably… minorly offensive. When I first saw Jeffree’s palette I was like, “That makes perfect sense for him.” he also did a pretty good job of explaining this in the first video I thought, where he said that it was a play on the catchphrase often used by him and his friends, “I am deceased! I am cremated!” when something was astounding or funny.
Jeffree Star and his new pallette, called “Cremated”: The price of getting cremated
But then there’s the whole thing of timing. This pandemic has gotten all of our nerves on edge and while the ‘cremated’ palette really would not have been that big of a deal if he had waited until Halloween to release it, releasing it right now during this pandemic and naming it ‘cremated’ may not have been the best idea. However… is it really fair of Jeffree to judge him for something that’s been in the works for over a year and would have been released anyway, even if we hadn’t had a pandemic? I don’t think so. It wasn’t just a spur of the moment idea he had, he has literally been working on this project for over a year, so it wasn’t like he was trying to profit off of this, he had literally had everything ready to go for awhile.
He also said that it was a term of respect for him as well, because his own father, as well as his two dogs who passed away last year were cremated. He also said it was a tradition to be cremated in his family, so it’s not like the title was coming from a place of complete disrespect. While I think the timing is rather unfortunate, and while yes, Jeffree has had a problematic past, the thing is, he’s never denied the fact that he’s problematic, and he has apologized and arguably grown from those incidents. Jeffree said it himself, this palette was coming from a place of art, not from a place of disrespect or even misguided humor. Everything was in place for this palette before COVID-19 and we seem to forget that there was life before this virus… and there will be life after this virus. Do you think it was a bad decision? You decide.
