This past week, TLC made an announcement about its new show. The show, “Hot and Heavy” is all about mixed-weight couples. The show follows three couples that are very different. One of them is of normal weight and the other being much heavier in weight. The show has already gotten some backlash and it hasn’t even aired yet!
TLC Hot and Heavy: What TLC Fans are Saying
Hot and Heavy is supposed to air on January 7th of 2020, but as of right now, it appears that there are many fans of the TLC network that are upset about the premise of the show. Many people are saying it is sexist and gives people the wrong ideas about body image and other beauty standards. TLC posted a trailer recently that said, “For these couples, love knows no size. See the highs and lows of their mixed-weight relationships.”
TLC Hot and Heavy: New Show Gets Serious Backlash
On Twitter, we saw a video trailer for the show and we saw many instances where the couples are shown in public while others around them are staring and making horrible comments about the weight of the women on the show. Twitter users also pointed out that this show should have both men and women of size instead of just women who are larger. They think that if TLC is going to do this show, they should focus on all genders.
The couples on the show are Joy and Chris, Kristin and Rusty, and Adrianna and Ricardo. In the trailers that we have seen, we see that Chris does want to propose to Joy, but his family has a lot to say to him about her weight. We also see him go out with his friends and they are constantly trying to convince him that he “deserves” a woman of a smaller size. It seems like there will be a lot of drama and problems that the couples have to go through, but this show is going to let TLC watchers know just what they are going through.
On social media, there have been comments made about how sexist the show is because overweight men are not represented on it. One Twitter user said, “I want mixed-weight to die a fiery death. Because overwhelmingly this is applied to fat women in relationships with less fat or thin men. Meanwhile pop culture has been giving us fat men with thin wives as a norm for live every comedy sitcom or romcom?!?” Some users were simply offended by the title of the show. It seems that you can’t make everyone happy and as of right now, TLC hasn’t responded to many of the users. We will keep you posted on what happens next with Hot and Heavy.
