Russell Peters carries the distinct honor of being the first stand up comedian to get a Netflix special. Originally from Canada, Peters began performing in 1989. In 2013, he was number three on Forbe’s list of highest-paid comedians. It’s safe to say he’s accomplished quite a lot in his life and isn’t done yet.
Aside from also appearing in films and television, he’s perhaps made another deal for himself. He has signed a deal with Amazon Prime Video for a new stand up special. The special is titled Deported and releases next year on January 17.
His new special was filmed live in Mumbai, India according to the trailer.
Russell Peters: Deported Official Trailer
In the short teaser trailer for his new special, he talks about his broken nose. While he was a boxer he had his nose broken and can now move it around freely. He shows everyone on stage as he moves it during his special. It’s odd and looks a bit out of place, but if he can make a joke from it, good on him.
He also makes a play on race. Russell Peters hails from Indian descent and he talks about it in the new special. In the trailer, he brings up how he’s happy to “be home” and jokes about being more comfortable here than in America. He can just be a normal “brown” man. Whether or not you find this humorous is your prerogative, but I don’t think it makes for a solid showing in a teaser trailer. You should probably lead with some of your better jokes to hook people in. Perhaps, this is one of his better jokes. In that case, we may all be in a lot of trouble.
The last part of the trailer gives us a fat joke. Yes, leading with the big guns I see. Peters jokes about his weight gain and how he went to the doctor to discuss it. The doctor asks him why he thinks he’s gaining weight, to which he responds “I have a mirror.”
Is This A Good Hook?
This is all pretty basic comedy and not very good writing. It seems long, drawn-out and boring. Of course, you can’t judge a full comedy special from 40 seconds, obviously. However, I don’t think this is a good lead-in, either for Peters or Amazon! Though time will tell and perhaps the rest of the special is hilarious. We can all find out next month, January 17 on Amazon Prime Video.
