Today, the series delves into the infamous Howard Stern episode where he made comments about Selena and her music that angered a community that looked up to her. The comments inspired a boycott that María Celeste Arrarás (Sofía Lama) was fully supportive of. She had someone on her program to talk about the comments, the feelings they inspire, and a boycott of Stern’s advertisers. She also gives out the number that allowed people to call in complaints to the show. This basically overwhelmed the phone lines and inspired an apology that was ultimately not looked at favorably.
For those behind the boycott, they saw his comments as an insult to their community, as well as Selena. They wanted him to be mindful that they have a lot of buying power.
El Secreto de Selena spoilers: Her legacy
The episode also focuses on the affect Selena had on people personally, as well as the community in general. In between delving into the tributes that poured in, it also shows Maria Celeste interviewing a drag queen who impersonated Selena (Gustavo, played by Luis Alberti). She wanted to know why he chose Selena, and the reason given was that “Selena chose me.” It was this connection to someone who had a similar look, and inspired big dreams.
Another person interviewed by Maria Celeste was a young woman who was also a Selena impersonator—the most famous one in Monterrey. Her name is Gabriela Contreras (Elyfer Torres). She spoke about going to several of Selena’s concerts, and how she almost had a chance to meet the singer. Her cousin was a real estate agent that showed Selena a house there. She had almost gotten to meet Selena, but the shooting happened before Selena could return to close the house deal.
El Secreto de Selena spoilers: Trouble ahead
This leads to some questions. Maria Celeste zeroes in on the idea Selena was going to buy a house in Monterrey. This leads to an interview with said cousin (Leticia, played by Roxana Padierna), where she learns that Selena had, in fact, been interested in a house. Through flashback scenes, we see Selena and Martinez talking about how much Selena loved the place, and she had all kinds of plans for a workshop space for her clothing line. Johana later tells Maria Celeste that she and the mystery man seemed closer than a client and their financial advisor.
Through more flashbacks, we see a meeting between Selena, Martínez, and Yolanda Saldívar (Damayanti Quintanar). They’re dining at a popular Hawaiian-themed place that Maria Celeste and her team later learn about and visit to learn more.
Yolanda is clearly jealous and trying to control the evening, but while Selena is supportive of Yolanda and doesn’t leave her out, she doesn’t exactly take Yolanda’s side in trying to get straight to business.

El Secreto de Selena spoilers: Going too far
Maria Celeste ends up nearly firing one of her reporters, (Alex, played by Gustavo Egelhaaf) after he makes a move she doesn’t approve of. He’d followed the trail and of the mystery man with a ponytail and finds Martínez’s apartment building. He tries to get through to Martínez by claiming he has a message from a recently-deceased friend, but he’s turned away.
Maria Celeste is angry that he broke the law by trying to gain access to the building under false pretenses. He also broke ethical codes and acted more as a paparazzi than a journalist. She’s disappointed, because she thought the man reminded her of her when she was a bit younger. She will, however, give him another chance.
El Secreto de Selena spoilers: The special
Finally, we see a fictionalized version of the special that aired following Selena’s death. They’d put together a lot of the interviews and other information to pay tribute to the singer. Maria Celeste is later conflicted, as the special ended up being the second highest-rated program in Hispanic TV history, but she feels like enjoying the success of it is almost like celebrating Selena’s death.
As part of the special, there’s also footage of Abraham, whose interview was conducted by another reporter for logistical reasons. He discusses the situation with the fan club and why Selena was at the hotel the day she was murdered.
