In a recent interview on “The Cutting Room Floor,” Yasiin Bey, also known as Mos Def, shared his perspective on Drake’s music, challenging the notion that it fits squarely within the hip-hop genre.
The legendary rapper was asked directly if he considers Drake to be “hip hop,” and Mos Def’s response was a clear departure from categorizing Drake within the hip-hop circle. Mos Def likened Drake’s tunes to shopping music, friendly, easy to listen to, and digest, occasionally with a subtle edge.
To illustrate his point, Mos Def used Target as a metaphor, emphasizing that Drake’s music is predominantly mainstream and commercial, labeling it as pop more than hip hop.
The critique doesn’t stop there. Mos Def questioned whether Drake challenges his audience with art that may not be universally enjoyable. He suggested that there’s a pervasive belief that everyone thinks Drake’s music is consistently “great,” creating an atmosphere of unwavering support and cheerleading.

The ongoing debate over Drake’s position in the hip-hop landscape has raged on for some time, with hip-hop purists criticizing him as too soft for their taste. Now, with a hip-hop great like Mos Def weighing in, the discussion gains new dimensions.
Despite Drake’s ability to showcase his lyrical prowess and prove his hip-hop credentials, there’s still an underlying sentiment that some contemporaries view him as leaning too much towards pop.
While Drake faces criticism from purists, it’s undeniable that he is one of the world’s most renowned artists, enjoying immense wealth. The trade-off between mass appeal and profitability seems to be a reality that Drake has navigated successfully in his career.
There’s no question that Mos Def has had a legendary career, not just in hip-hop but also film. We also don’t think that what he said is wrong by any means. Drake is enjoyable and fun to listen to, but, definitely falls much more in with the pop genre.
