The actor received mass condemnation when he decided to lash out at the comedian, after the latter had made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair loss. While he has apologised since then, the impact of it has already been felt on his career.
Sony and Netflix have decided to suspend two of his projects, with his acting career now in the balance. But for Whoopi, she felt that Will was big enough to overcome this scandal.
In a statement, she said: “Some of Will Smith’s future projects are in question. The question is, does he have a path back? Yes, of course he does. … He’ll be fine, he’ll be back. No worries.” Whoopi is also aware of what it takes to bounce back from a major controversy.
She had also faced backlash for her actions when she was criticised over her comments concerning the Holocaust. She had suggested that Adolf Hitler’s actions were based on inhumanity rather than it being a racial issue. She was subsequently suspended from ‘The View’ for two weeks before apologising for her actions.
But now that is all in the past, as she continues to look forward. With that being said, there is no reason why Will cannot come back stronger. After all, controversies have happened before.
She added: “This is not the first time craziness has happened onstage, but this is the first time we’ve seen anybody assault anybody onstage.” The response on social media was not kind towards Whoopi. A certain subset of people felt that her comments had the impact of downplaying Will’s liability.
In the process of doing so, the victim in all of this, Chris Rock had been forgotten. One person wrote: “Whoopi Goldberg. STOP SOUNDING STUPID. WILL SMITH IS A BULLY AND A JERK AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN ARRESTED ON THE SPOT…Whoopi stop protecting criminals.”
