‘Welcome to Plathville’ Spoilers reveal that we’ve all seen Kim Plath make some half-hearted overtures toward eldest son, Ethan Plath, about his choice to go no-contact, or at least attempt to by asking him to come pick up his brother Isaac at the door or by telling him that she was going to pull up in the driveway to drop Lydia off at his house, but neither Kim nor Barry has ever actually said to Ethan, “Look, I want to sit down and talk about all of this.” Barry in particular said in this episode that he hasn’t reached out to Ethan because of the “feedback” he’s gotten.
So literally, he’s relying on Kim’s word and hasn’t asked Ethan about one thing, he hasn’t asked Ethan about what he’s thinking or how he’s feeling, and while he seemed to care last season judging from the near tears he was in at Ethan’s departure, one has to wonder if those tears were genuine or if they were just for the camera.
‘Welcome to Plathville’: Will Barry ever reach out to Ethan?
It seems that Barry is not very in touch with his emotions either, and that’s not really a good thing, because it has trickled down to the kids. It really seems to have affected Ethan, you would think, Ethan, being the oldest son would be one of Barry’s top priorities and he would want to make sure that his mental and emotional health were in tip-top shape.
But Barry seems to live on the surface of everything. With the Plaths, a lot of things seem to be about order and appearance. When we first met Barry it seemed like he thought he was conducting the world’s greatest social experiment, kids who had never drank coke before, or watched TV, and he seemed to thoroughly enjoy the thought of that – but it begs the question – was that all the Plath kids were to Barry and Kim?
Some great social experiment to see how they turned out without the “junk” of the world, but to what end? If that’s all it was, then what were they trying to accomplish? As it is, I think it would mean a lot if Barry would reach out to Ethan, man to man, and try and own some of the emotional damage he’s caused. It’s a strange thing that he can have a relationship with Micah, but won’t seemed to try with Ethan.
It honestly looks like Barry doesn’t really consider his children to have feelings outside of what he raised them to have. Also, it smacks of favoritism, letting Micah have the relationship with the younger Plaths that Ethan wanted – no matter how hard they try, Micah will never be able to replace Ethan. We’ll see where this lands. Stay tuned!!!
