‘Welcome to Plathville’ spoilers finds that when talking to Micah and Moriah about their ‘worldly activities’, Kim Plath automatically went to one place – sex. She advised Moriah not to ruin herself for other people to which I cringed.
I will say this, no one wants Moriah to have a bad relationship experience, no one wants Moriah to get hurt in any way, shape, or form. But the way Kim went about phrasing that is wrong, and it seems to ve a mistake that a lot of fundie parents make. This way of thinking also reinforces sexist ideals because so often a lot of pressure is unnecessarily put on girls to remain ‘pure’ until marriage.
‘Welcome to Plathville’ Spoilers: Why is Kim so obsessed?
If that is a conscious choice on the girl’s part and she is well-informed about everything then that is a perfectly fine choice to make. However, sometimes fundie parents deliberately misinform their daughters with some pretty derogatory euphemisms.
Sometimes they use the euphemism of previously chewed gum, saying that once gum loses it’s ‘flavor’ it never gets it back, The ‘flavor’ is often euphemism for a girl’s virginity. This kind of mindset is really harmful to young girls.
Because while in an ideal world everyone’s first sexual experience should be a wonderful, life-affirming thing, sometimes it isn’t. Sometimes it’s just an event that happens, and sometimes it’s a traumatic event, and those should never happen.
But a lot of pressure is put on these young, fundamentalist girls that their value lies in their purity, and ultimatley, their ability to concieve and educate children. This may have been the norm back in the days before technology, or when everyone had their own family farm to run, but times have changed.
The thing is, this boyfriend issue is obviously going to cause some other issues between Moriah and her Mom. Right now, Kim doesn’t really know who her daughter is dating, and that works. But Lydia mentioned the fact that she wanted to start hanging out with Moriah… will she even be allowed to?
As she grows older, Lydia, who’s been the golden child up until now, may want to press boundaries and Kim already doesn’t trust Moriah around the younger kids, if Lydia tries to press boundaries, will Moriah be blamed for her sister’s downfall like Olivia was hers?
It’s about time Kim got a new scapegoat in the family and Moriah seems about as likely as any since Olivia and Ethan have cut off all contact. Stay tuned!!!
