‘Welcome to Plathville’ Spoilers finds that Ethan knows machinery, it’s clear. When the washer wasn’t working, he made a tool to help him pull out the drum and clean it so that it would spin again.
He said such ingenuity was borne of simple boredom back on the farm because his parents wouldn’t let them watch TV or play video games and I guess there’s only so many imaginary games one can play before one gets bored. So Ethan started his passion in life by taking apart an old alarm clock of his Dad’s and putting it back together again, and that’s how he began adept at being Mr. Fix-It.
‘Welcome to Plathville’ Spoilers: Ethan needs to sharpen his emotional toolbelt
However… maybe instead of giving him old blenders and stuff to fix, maybe Ma and Pa Plath could have had a few more heart to hearts with their son about what disappointment means. Granted, in life I don’t think that Ethan’s expectations were ever very high, so he’s not really that well acquainted with disappointment.
Then again, I could be totally wrong about the expectation part. I kind of hope that I am and maybe just the fact that his emotional needs were always kind of ignored is what prompted Ethan to be so blunt when telling Olivia about how they didn’t get the house they made an offer on. He just said it like it didn’t really matter if they got it or not.
I will say this, at least he had the emotional decency to hesitate at first when she asked him. But when she pressed him he just told her flat out that they didn’t get it, that someone else got it. Poor Olivia just broke down after that.
She wanted that house so badly and wanted to get away from Kim and Barry so bad that she could almost taste it. The fact that Ethan just dropped the fact like a hot potato and dropped it so matter-of-factly just broke her.
Olivia feels trapped in Cairo, with Ethan’s family so close by and with her family being so far away. She said it would be different if she were trapped in a place that she liked, but knowing that the Plaths don’t love her and don’t accept her the way she is, even though there is absolutely nothing wrong with her, just breaks her heart, and I honestly don’t think anyone can blame her for feeling that way.
It’s hard knowing that she’s in a place where she doesn’t feel like she fits in. We hope they find a house soon. Stay tuned!!!
