There was huge uproar following non-binary singer Sam Smith’s show at the 2023 Grammys with many going on to compare his performance as ‘Satanic.’

Senator Ted Cruz Bashes Sam Smith’s Satanic Grammy Performance-‘This Is Evil’

Smith, who identifies with they/them pronouns, made an entrance at the yearly awards ceremony wearing a red outfit and a hat with horns, and sang their smash hit single ‘Unholy.’

During their act, which was backed up by Kim Petras, there were fireworks and supporting dancers wearing costumes of the devil. Smith and Petras were given the accolade of best pop duo/group performance at the ceremony, with Petras making history as the first transgender female to win a Grammy and Smith becoming the first non-binary victor.

However, this did not go down well for the following reasons. First of all, a certain subset of people felt that the performance was exhibiting inappropriate themes, given that Smith has a fan base that includes a lot of younger people. Secondly, others simply were of the view that Smith was exploiting their sexuality in order to generate publicity and clout.

One person wrote: “This video hits all the checkpoints, from Sam Smith and [their] outlandish stance on cultural appropriateness, to devil worshipping & diminishing religion,” while Senator Ted Cruz said: “This…is…evil.”

This is not the first time that Smith has faced controversy of late. The singer was reproached for the revealing, scanty outfits in their “I’m Not Here to Make Friends” music video.

The video showcases Smith in a variety of daring clothes, such as an extravagant plumed headdress, bedazzled corsets with nipple covers, and skirts with high slits. Certain commentators described the visuals as revolting and wicked and blamed Smith for utilising their sexuality like a disguise and forcing it on everyone.

Smith has shown time and again that they will continue to do what they think is best regardless of what others may have to say about it all. And that is not going to change anytime soon.

So there you have it folks. What did you think about this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below. If you liked reading this article, then check out our other features on the Daily Soap Dish. Also check out Screen Dynamite for more celebrity news.
