It would have come as a big disappointment for UFC fans that Tony Ferguson would not be coming up against Dustin Poirier at the fast approaching UFC 254 event. Fans were already looking forward to the bout as it seemed just a matter of time before the fight was made.
However, Dana White revealed this week that it wouldn’t happen, and that they were looking for a new opponent for Ferguson to fight on the same card. But, which superstar in the UFC could we see step up to the challenge and take the fight?
UFC News: Dan Hooker
There are very few better opponents for Ferguson to face to prepare him for the fight against Poirier than a battle against Dan Hooker. Hooker is rated at number five in the lightweight division, and would present a competitive challenge for Ferguson.
There would be a lot of sense in this fight happening, as Hooker was recently beaten by Poirier via unanimous decision. It would also benefit Hooker as a win could see him move further up the rankings and potentially set up a title challenge further down the line.
UFC News: Stephen Thompson
Wonderboy is one of the toughest strikers in the UFC, and with details surrounding his next fight unclear, he could easily fill in the void left by Poirier. Thompson has recently challenged Nick Diaz to a fight on his big return, but the date of that looks set to be next year.
That could easily open the door for Thompson to take this fight against Ferguson at UFC 254. Thompson has beaten some huge names during his career so far, with the standout name being Jorge Masvidal at UFC 217. However, he hasn’t fought since UFC 244 in November last year where he beat Vicente Luque via decision.
UFC News: Charles Oliveira
Instead, Tony Ferguson could come up against Charles Oliveira at the upcoming event. This bout would certainly sell, as fans would be intrigued to see the two of them go at it. The 30-year-old has been in incredible form since 2018, as he has won all seven fights.
He hasn’t gone the distance in any of these fights, as he has won five via submission and two via KO/TKO. It would certainly present a very different kind of challenge to Ferguson.
