Tony Dungy has sparked controversy by claiming that Taylor Swift is having a detrimental impact on the NFL and is a diversion from the team’s main goal.
The former NFL player and coach was asked about his feelings about Travis Kelce’s ardent fan, Taylor Swift, in a recent appearance with Fox News.
Dungy said that the “Taylor Swift effect” takes away from the action on the field, making a comparison between her presence and the outside noise he feels is creeping into the game.
Dungy’s strong credentials, a three-season NFL stay, a Super Bowl-winning coaching career, and an acknowledged induction into the NFL Hall of Fame, mean that his opinions are weighted.
Dungy said, “That’s the thing that’s disenchanting people with sports now. There’s so much on the outside coming in. Entertainment value and different things taking away from what really happens on the field.”

Dungy is crucial even though Taylor Swift has been a regular visitor in Travis Kelce’s suite at Chiefs games since mid-September, including a recent appearance on New Year’s Eve against the Bengals.
Swift is apparently planning to attend tomorrow night’s playoff game between the Dolphins and Kansas City, despite the bitterly cold weather.
Although Taylor Swift’s answer to the interview is yet unclear, her previous reaction to a joke at the Golden Globes, in which she jabbed daggers at the presenter during his opening monologue, could offer an indication of her possible feelings.
Dungy’s worries seem to be in line with the notion that Taylor herself isn’t the problem, but rather that the NFL is trying to draw attention away from its main offering, the games, in an effort to draw in new viewers.
