Deadline has reported that Timothee Chalamet is headed to a world of pure imagination in a prequel to the famous story, and will focus on a young Willy Wonka and his adventure before opening his famous chocolate factory.
Apparently, Chalamet has been the top choice for the role for some time but scheduling has been a hurdle to overcome. This news, however, isn’t sitting well with a lot of people and many think that the story should be left alone.
In 2005, Johnny Depp played the role, and even he received mixed reviews as well as the film. It seems no one may ever be able to step into the shoes of the great, late Gene Wilder. I tend to agree. Wilder is a legend, and to be able to take on a role of that caliber is no easy feat.
Timothee Chalamet Reportedly Cast As Willy Wonka – People Are Not Thrilled
Viewers commented on the news, via an IGN post, “Hollywood has no new ideas”, “Can we just come up with a new idea and not a prequel, sequel or remake?”, “Why are they making it again? ?♂️”, “They need to let this damn movie go already”, “Nah he’s not that charismatic”, “Another remake ?”, and “Leave the classics alone!”
As much as I love what movies are able to do nowadays, there are lines that shouldn’t be crossed. You wouldn’t remake ‘The Godfather’ (at least not yet), you wouldn’t remake ‘Heat’, and you shouldn’t try (again) to remake another film about Willy Wonka. Especially when the original was so damned perfect. No one, I repeat, no one can even touch Wilder’s performance.
Some things should just be left alone, and I believe this is yet another one of those.
What do you think? Are you a fan of this casting or should they leave the story and films alone? Let us know in the comments below.
