We all remember the early 2000’s, the show “The Simple Life” and how one of its stars, Paris HIlton was the subject of a widely circulated sex tape, right? If you’re a millenial of a certain age, you will remember. However, her new documentary that’s freely available on Youtube sheds new light on this little production and just how badly it hurt her and her entire family.
Paris said that when the tape was made, she was young and in love with the person who was filming her. It was not really a mutually agreed-upon decision, rather, he co-erced her into it. He kept telling her, “You’re so boring, do you want me to call someone else?” she said it was her first real relationship and that she would have done anything to please him.
This is Paris – Once Upon a Sex Tape
Girls, I think we can all relate there. There’s that one guy when you’re young that you would do anything, including make bad decisions for, and apparently for Paris, this guy was that guy.
We’ve all been there.
Paris Hilton grew up in a surprisingly conservative household. From what she detailed in the documentary, she was expected to proudly uphold the family name from a very young age. Her Grandfather built an empire, and as his Granddaughter she was expected to carry on his legacy.
But Paris, in her own words, was just trying to be Paris and to find herself as a young person. Sometimes as adults, we forget that children have to grow into legacies, that they don’t often fit in the footsteps left behind.
Of the tape, her sister Nicki Hilton said that at the time when the tabloids were exploding about it, the family lived in a hotel, and that every morning she would run to flip everyone’s newspaper over so that the nasty headline wouldn’t be the first thing that their neighbors would see. Their Mom said that it threw her into a deep depression, and that she often had trouble getting out of bed.
Paris says that she was villified for the incident, and that I remember well. A lot of media at the time made fun of her for even making the decision to let her boyfriend film her, but when you try a little empathy and view that decision from the eyes of a young girl who was totally in love with the person, and never once thought that this person in her life would betray her, then you see where, in the moment this decision would be at the very least plausible.
She said that it was meant to be a private moment, and never to be released. She didn’t realize that her boyfriend was a dirtbag who gave out the URL to their sextape on national TV!!!
He was saying that people had speculated that he drugged her and raped her and while Paris did not confirm nor deny that, she did say that she was coerced, and that every time she saw press about that tape that it was like “being electronically raped”.
We have to admit, that while no one made good decisions here, this whole incident was disgusting, and someone who was vile and greedy profited off a teenage girl’s naivete. Some people will scoff at that, but just for a minute, put yourself back in your high school mentality. Any way you cut it, this was wrong. We must do bettter.
