One pint, two pints, three? Well, that’s how some royal fans might be counting to themselves when they are celebrating Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee. That’s because there’s a new report that says pubs in Britain will stay open until 1am for one weekend to help mark this major milestone for the queen. Now that’s a good reason to celebrate, right? Here’s what you need to know.
According to a new report, bars and clubs can stay open until 1am as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations over the June bank holiday weekend. That’s because home secretary Priti Patel is set to make a special order to relax licensing hours to give venues in England and Wales the option of staying open to 1am, rather than 11pm, during the first weekend in June. However, supermarkets and off-licenses, however, will not be able to sell alcohol for extended hours.
There’s Great News For Britons Celebrating Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee
Patel said the move will provide a “boost” to the hospitality industry after its struggles with Covid as well as a chance to “raise a glass” to the Queen in the 70th year of her reign. “For seventy years Her Majesty The Queen has served the UK and the Commonwealth with the utmost dignity, steadfastness and resolve,“ she said.
“The Platinum Jubilee is a truly historic national occasion, which will see families, friends and communities across the country come together to celebrate this unprecedented landmark in a remarkable reign. Over the extended Bank Holiday weekend, we will be able to raise a glass to toast Her Majesty’s incredible service to our country, while also providing a boost to the hospitality industry after a challenging couple of years.”
That said, Queen Elizabeth reached her Platinum Jubilee in February, celebrating 70 years on the throne and will turn 96 next week. She overcame a bout of Covid after testing positive that month, later revealing the virus had left her “very tired and exhausted.” If that weren’t enough, she was also unwell last October, and after spending a night in hospital she spent the following three months under doctors’ orders to only conduct light duties, meaning she missed a number of prominent events.
However, it seems like she’s also been canceling one event after another. but it’s not like anyone can blame her, right? The Queen skipped this year’s Commonwealth Day service. But just as she was forced to miss the Cenotaph last year so she will miss the Commonwealth Day service last week – and the Queen has asked, once again, Prince Charles to represent her.
