Ian Somerhalder has praised his wife Nikki Reed for saving him from financial ruin.

The star, who is best known from Vampire Diaries, recently celebrated his wife’s 33rd birthday. While the celebrations did dominate the proceedings, Ian took some time out in order to make sure that he thanked Nikki for her selflessness. In a post to his fans on Instagram, we can see Nikki lying on Ian’s shoulder as he is holding a beverage in his hand.
The post was captioned by the following comments: “I owe you such gratitude…I’ve never disclosed this publicly, but this woman worked selflessly for 2yrs to build me out of a terrible business situation.” So what was the financial mess that Ian had gotten himself into?
Well, Ian had invested heavily into a company that ultimately crumbled. It turned out that the other parties involved in the venture were committing fraud. Not only that, the decline of the oil and gas industry meant that Ian’s business took a huge financial hit due to the absence of international interest. All of this led to astronomical levels of debt and a toll on his health.
He added: “I was left in an EIGHT- FIGURE hole…I had to travel the world weekly to pay for massive monthly six-figure banknotes and ended up in the hospital 4 times in 2 years.” But through it all, Nikki was by his side. She stepped up to the plate and took matters into her own hands to make sure that her husband was okay.
Unlike Ian, who had decided to work more so he could pay off the debt, Nikki made sure that Ian took some time off to recuperate. In the meantime, she set up her own team to negotiate the terms of the debt.
With an agreement finally in place, she was able to use her contacts to make sure that the finances were in check. He continued: “She devoted her life to getting me out of that mess, and it almost killed her along the way…I was able to start my life over because of this woman.”
