Twenty years ago, the world learned about Prince William and Kate Middleton’s fairytale royal romance. Kate was first photographed with Prince William two decades ago this week.
Prince William And Kate Middleton Were First Photographed On The Swiss Slopes
The couple were seen together on the Swiss slopes in April 2004. At the time, the future King and Queen attempted to keep their relationship a secret, but the public went berserk when The Sun published the picture with the headline, “Finally Wills Gets a Girl.”
William and Kate started dating when they were students at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. The photo showed William with an adoring gaze upon Princess Catherine at his family’s favorite ski resort.
Prince Harry and some of their other friends were also with them. The article contained a series of photos of William with Kate and called her William’s.
“First serious girlfriend.”
“We were friends for over a year first,”
Prince William explained in an ITV News interview with Tom Bradby after the pair got engaged.
“It just sort of blossomed from then on.”
The first time William starts to have romantic feelings for Kate is when he sees her in a black sheer dress at their college fashion show called “The Art of Seduction.”
Upon the first pictures of William and Kate being released, Buckingham Palace said that The Sun violated their agreement to leave William alone and temporarily banned the paper from accessing the royal family.
The Future Queen
Everyone wanted to know who the girl was in the pictures. The newspaper made an interesting point:
“One of William’s girlfriends could become Queen one day. Her subjects will be entitled to know all about her.”
When the front-page article was released, it sparked a worldwide interest in the couple. Royal fans wanted a good love story to root for, and that’s what they got.
The photos certainly reflected that the couple was in love. William appeared to be very protective of Kate. William knew what it was like to be in the spotlight, but Kate was new to the game.
In the pictures, she looked relaxed with the knowledge that she was with her man, and not even the glare of the paparazzi could ruin her fun time.
William’s protectiveness could also be from what happened to his mother, Princess Diana, who was killed in a car crash after being chased by the paparazzi in August 1997.
In October 2010, William asked Kate to marry him on a vacation in Kenya, Africa. He popped the question on the side of Mount Kenya.
William slid his late mother’s ring onto Kate’s finger as she happily accepted his proposal. Before the wedding, Queen Elizabeth gave William and Kate new royal titles. They became known to the world as
“The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.”
Kate Has Endured Much Controversy And Remains Stoic
On April 29th, 2011, William and Kate had their long-awaited fairytale wedding in Westminster Abbey in London. It was the most beautiful ceremony. Kate looked like an angel in her stunning French Chantilly lace-embroidered wedding dress.
The couple went on to have three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. They are a very happy family.
Kate has endured some harsh words over the years. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle accused the Princess of making Meghan cry ahead of the Sussexes wedding day due to a row over Charlotte’s flower girl dress.
Meghan’s mouthpiece, Omid Scobie, claimed in the Dutch version of his tell-all book, “Endgame,” that Kate Middleton was a royal racist, which is entirely unfounded.
Recently, Kate endured online abuse from online conspiracy theorists trying to make sense of Kate’s ongoing absence from the public eye.
Kate had abdominal surgery in January and was recovering quietly at her home in Windsor. She had William snap a photo of her and their kids for Mothering Day in the UK, and all hell broke loose. The photo was edited. News media outlets made a fuss and took it down.
Shaken but not beaten, Kate publicly apologizes, showing the world how dignified she is. Recently, Kate was diagnosed with cancer, and she made a public announcement.
With everything the Princess has dealt with during her time as a royal, anyone else would have folded under pressure. But she remains stoic. Willam and the world are lucky to have our Princess Catherine.
