Dolly Parton– singer-songwriter, philanthropist and bonafide American Treasure has proven once more why she deserves the universal love she receives.

When the 75-year-old Tennessean learned the building a statue of her at the Tennessee Capitol was being considered , she shot the state legislature down in the most eloquent of ways,

“I want to thank the Tennessee legislature for their consideration of a bill to erect a statue of me on the Capitol grounds,” she wrote. “I am honored and humbled by their intention, but I have asked the leaders of the state legislature to remove the bill from any and all consideration. Given all that is going on in the world, I don’t think putting me on a pedestal is appropriate at this time.”

Of course, being the beautiful soul she is, Dolly didn’t want to dash everyone’s hopes of having their idol immortalized at some stage.

The reason Dolly Parton doesn’t want a statue made of her, makes us want to make a statue of her.

“I hope, though, that somewhere down the road several years from now or perhaps after I’m gone, if you still feel I deserve it, then I’m certain I will stand proud in our great State Capitol as a grateful Tennessean.”

The buzz around a possible statue of the living legend first began in the summer of last year when a petition circulated, calling for the Confederate monuments in Tennessee to be torn down and replaced with statues of the country star.

Ironically, Parton’s reminder that there are currently more important matters at stake than whether or not she has a statue erected in her likeness makes it all that more important that we honor her with a statue in her likeness!

This isn’t the first time Dolly has passed on accepting a prestigious honor. Twice she turned down the Trump administration’s offer of presenting her with the Medal of Freedom. Dolly couldn’t accept the nation’s highest civilian honor the first time it was offered to her because her husband was ill. The second occasion was denied as she would not travel in the pandemic.

“I don’t work for those awards,” she was quoted as saying, adding that it was a nice compliment for people to think she might deserve it, but she wasn’t sure that was true.

If all of her charitable contributions, including working tirelessly to promote education, donating more than 100 million children’s books to improve literacy and a million dollars to fund Covid-19 vaccine research isn’t worth of a medal or a statue, then her library of hits, including fan favorite, Jolene, is.

Face it Dolly, one way or another you will be commemorated, because we Will Always Love You.
