It looks like we’re going to get a fifth soap opera added to the daytime lineup on CBS, but it’s not any that the fans want like ‘One Life to Live’ or ‘All My Children’ and so on, and ‘The Gates’ Spoilers are intrigued by the idea.

The news came curtesy of Soap Opera Digest and the Hollywood Reporter, the latter of which reported it’s the first soap opera since ‘Generations’ that will be predominately black.

A venture between CBS Studios and the NAACP is expected to be centered around a wealthy black family living in an upscale gated community.

With Michele Val Jean of ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’ fame serving as writer, showrunner, and an executive producer, along with Sheila Ducksworth, Leon Russell, Derrick Johnson, and Kimberly Doebereine as her co-executive producers.

CBS is joining forces with the NAACP to produce a new daytime drama, THE GATES, which will be scripted by acclaimed writer Michele Val Jean. https://t.co/g9Kq5cjz9d

‘The Gates’ Spoilers – New perspective

Sheila Ducksworth is the president of the CBS Studios NAACP venture, and she released a statement earlier.

“THE GATES will be everything we love about daytime drama, from a new and fresh perspective. This series will salute an audience that has been traditionally underserved, with the potential to be a groundbreaking moment for broadcast television. With multi-dimensional characters, juicy storylines and Black culture front and center, THE GATES will have impactful representation, one of the key touchstones of the venture. I’m excited to develop this project with CBS and P&G, two of the longest and most passionate champions of broadcast and daytime television, and the NAACP, whose enduring commitment to Black voices and artists is both powerful and inspiring. I also want to thank CBS’ George Cheeks, NAACP’s Derrick Johnson and P&G’s Marc Pritchard for their personal involvement and support to take our next step forward with THE GATES.”

‘The Gates’ Spoilers – Plenty of potential

As with any new show, there’s plenty of potential to succeed and fail, and it’ll be fun to see what the writers have in store for us as we get to settle in with a new family in the soap world and see their adventures.

There hasn’t been any news yet if it’ll share the same universe and ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’ and ‘The Young and the Restless’ since those are from a different company, but there is potential for crossovers if the agreements can be made.

This also has the potential to be a touchy topic for soap fans in general as many shows were previously taken off the air and while their fanbases have been doing everything they can to bring them back.

With soaps being a generational product and established fanbases for other shows that may not be happy at being passed over, this could be interesting to see how it all unfolds.
