New season, who dis? Netflix has released the first images of The Crown Season 5 with actress Imelda Staunton as the new Queen Elizabeth in the highly-acclaimed series. The drama chronicles the life of Queen Elizabeth from the 1940s to modern times, while giving an inside look at her early reign.
Production on season five began in the UK earlier this month, with Imelda Staunton, taking over the role of Her Majesty from Olivia Colman. The actress is best known for her Oscar-nominated role in 2004’s Vera Drake, and as Dolores Umbridge in Harry Potter, Staunton will portray the Queen throughout the 1990s and to 2003.
The Crown Gives Fans A Glimpse Into Season 5
Seasons five and six of The Crown are set in the 1990’s, which was a decade that saw the Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales split, the collapse of the Duke of York’s marriage to Sarah Ferguson, the Windsor Castle fire, and Princess Diana’s death.
Speaking to the BBC about playing the Queen earlier this year, Oscar-nominated actress says she’s definitely excited to dig into her new royal heels.
“I think my sort of extra challenge, as if I needed it, is that I’m now doing the Queen that we’re a little more familiar with. With Claire Foy, it was almost history and now I’m playing one that people could say ‘she doesn’t do that,’ ‘she’s not like that,’ and that’s my personal bête noire,” she explained.
Other new cast members include Jonathan Price as Prince Philip, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, Dominic West as Prince Charles, Elizabeth Debicki as Diana, Princess of Wales, and Jonny Lee Miller as former British Prime Minister John Major.
