The duo called it quits after Matt decided to walk away in light of the backlash Rachel had received in response to her alleged racist social media activity. The pair have continued to keep in touch, but Matt wants to just remain cordial. An insider said: “It seems like he just wants to be friends.”
So why are there still rumours of the duo reuniting? Well, it seems Rachael wants to have something more. This is not out of the realms of possibility, given that Clare Crawley and Dale Moss have gotten back together. After all, who would have seen that coming. And yet, the unthinkable had happened? Matt vowed to take some time off following the commencement of the show.
Insiders confirmed Rachael’s intentions: “Her feelings for him never went away. She still loves him. [He is]hesitant to take her back.” It would be a massive gamble for Matt to get back together with her. The hatred towards Rachael is unlikely to die down for some time, and with the wounds still fresh, it takes a brave man to put himself into the firing line.
Not only that, with some sections of the fan base still hostile towards Rachael, it could easily spill over to Matt. He had previously spoken on Rachael taking time to educate herself, and that is where the focus should be. In a previous interview after the show, Matt said: “As someone who grew up in the South, it takes me to a place that I don’t often like to think about. I wasn’t OK.
“It was in that moment and the conversation that I had that Rachael might not understand what it means to be Black in America.” Although Matt has been responding back to Rachael, we are unsure as to the reasoning behind it. Whether he is reaching out as a friend or in a romantic sense is all up in the air. We will have to see how this one will play out.
