The pair infamously walked away from each other, following Rachael’s social media activity which was deemed to be exacerbating racism. Although Matt made significant mistakes along the way, including a reported hook up with another woman just when a reconciliation seemed on the cards, Catherine believes now is the time to lay their cards on the table.
In an interview with Us Weekly, she urged the duo to go ahead with their plans. She said: “Just commit to each other. If they want to be together, [, they should] commit to each other and know that there’s a lot of noise out there…And I think that’s what they’re doing.” While the two had been criticised for their on-off stance, Catherine does not see it that way. She felt it was necessary for several reasons. First, a lot had gone on in front of the cameras.
With emotions running high, there is not a clear opportunity to think things over. Not only that, the pair would only know if they missed each other, following a period apart. Now that groundwork has been put in place, it can only be for the betterment of their relationship. Catherine added: “I think taking a break and reconnecting is going to be really good for their relationship.”
That time apart has allowed Matt to draw a clear plan on how he sees his future with Rachael. Initially, Matt wanted Rachael to go away and learn from her mistakes. And yet, he has changed his whole viewpoint since. He is happy to aid her along the journey and learn about these racial issues as a couple. In an interview with WSJ. Magazine, Matt said: “I need…a partner.
“If that woman isn’t Black — to understand what comes with me and my life and being Black…And I think it’s unfair to leave people without the ability to unlearn and be better.” With the pair knowing what they fully want, it is a question of whether they can deal with the criticism that is going to come their way. We will have to see how this will all play out.
