Last night’s 50th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards was full of lovely surprises, unforgettable moments, and some results.
Kevin Frazier and Nischelle Turner, the hosts of Entertainment Tonight, hosted the show. The Venue was the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles.
Supporting Actor, Actress, and Best Daytime Drama Went to General Hospital
The first award presented was Outstanding Supporting Actress. It was touching that Sonya Eddy (Epiphany Johnson, GH) won the award, as she was an outstanding actress and a beautiful person. Ms. Eddy played the head nurse for 16 years; everyone respected her, and when she spoke, people listened. Even Sonny Corinthos listened and followed her direction.
Kelly Thiebaud (Britt Westbourne, GH) was also in line for supporting actress. Her storyline about her suffering from Huntington’s disease was some of her most incredible work. She was powerful and heartbreaking all at once.
Robert Gossett (Marshall Ashford, GH) was the perfect choice for the Outstanding Supporting Actor position. We’ve seen Nicholas Chavez (Spencer Cassadine) deservedly win the award last year, and as insufferable as his character can be, he’s a stellar actor.
Gossett is a dignified, understated actor whose scenes can produce the warmest feelings. It was nice to see him win and thank his late son.
Outstanding Writing And The Young And The Restless
Outstanding writing went to The Young and the Restless, and this biased part of this particular writer wanted General Hospital to win.
However, it isn’t lost on this particular writer that Y&R had some exceptional storytelling this past year, with Melissa Claire Egan (Chelsea Lawson) almost jumping off a building with Jason Thompson (Billy Abbott) to catch her in the nick of time.
Mark Grossman’s (Adam Newman) and Courtney Hope’s (Sally Spectra’s) push/pull relationship keeps us hanging. Trevor St. John’s (Tucker McCall) brief but memorable marriage to Eileen Davidson (Ashley Abbot) is part of a larger storyline.
However, General Hospital is not a “classic soap.” This tends to work for and against the show. The whole mafia angle either draws people in or turns them off. The writing team at General Hospital is always superb. That being said, nobody does “classic soap” like the Y&R’s writing team.
Eden McCoy (Josslyn Jacks) won for Outstanding Younger Performer, which is terrific. She is phenomenal, and it was a sweet dedication to her recently passed mother.
Tribute To Late Actors
There was a brief tribute to Tyler Christopher, who played Nikolas Cassadine on GH, and Stefan DiMera on Days of Our Lives. They barely spent enough time honoring them, which was disappointing.
In the same spirit, no tribute was dedicated solely to Billy Miller, who played Drew Cain and Jason Morgan on GH and Billy Abbot on Y&R. That was just as disappointing.
The only tribute to Billy Miller was during the song montage “Life is Sweet” by Jennifer Nettles. He deserved much more of a dedication.
The Annual Daytime Emmy Awards should have had a tribute to Jackie Zeman (Bobbie Spencer (GH). Jackie was on GH for 45 years.
Susan Lucci (Erica Kane) received a well-deserved Lifetime Achievement Award, and she was radiant, humble, and triumphant.
Alley Mills (Heather Webber) won for Outstanding Guest Performance. The actress plays crazy very well, so it was a good choice.
Rebecca Herbst (Elizabeth Baldwin) looked dazzling as she paid tribute to General Hospital’s 60th anniversary. While keeping things short and sweet is good, the tribute was lackluster at best. They would have found time to fit in some Luke and Laura if they wanted to get serious.
The Bold and The Beautiful
Thorsten Kaye (Ridge Forrester) and Jacqueline MacInnes Wood (Steffy Forrester) won for Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress.
This writer has not seen B&B they must be brilliant actors to surpass Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos, GH), Finola Hughes (Anna Devane, GH), Michelle Stafford (Phyllis Summers Y&R), or Melissa Claire Egan (Chelsea Lawson, Y&R) this year.
The person deciding this must be a big B&B fan. Maurice Benard’s expression when they announced Outstanding Lead Actor was telling.
It was a pleasant surprise that General Hospital won for Outstanding Daytime Drama. It was well-deserved and one of the highlights of the evening.
Overall, the 50th Daytime Emmy Awards wasn’t as much of a party as in years prior.
