Teachers Facing Increasing Abuse On TikTok

Teachers are increasingly becoming targets of abusive behaviour on the social media platform TikTok.

According to reports, there have been numerous teachers that have reported cases of harassment as of late. As a consequence of all this, they have decided to get a sick note from their doctors in order to take time off work.

These cases have been exacerbated by the recent lockdown measures caused by the pandemic. Therefore, given that teachers are not given access to the same resources, there has been an extra burden.

In addition, as there are pressures on teachers to work from home, there is a feeling that this is taking a toll on the profession.

In response, the government has vowed to put in measures to tackle such a problem. Tom Rogers, who happens to be a history teacher, spoke on how he has been personally affected by the abuse.

During an interview with the BBC, he said: “You’re thinking when you go in that kids are laughing at you, and everyone’s seen it [videos]. You don’t know who’s seen it, but you know probably a lot of kids have.”

Nevertheless, nothing seems to have been done about it. Tom has reported the video to the police. In addition, TikTok has not gotten back to him about it.

The result of all this is that the videos are still online, which is not going to help him in any way. And if this continues, Tom feels that many teachers will buckle under the pressure and thus leave their jobs.

He added: “I think it’s pushing some over the edge because of everything we’ve been through in the last two years. [They are] quite fragile coming out of the pandemic.

“They will quit their jobs. They will have to go off work with stress-related illness[es] because of this. This will be the tipping point.”

This increasing trend is a major concern, and the only way that it can be stopped is if all the parties involved, including the school and police authorities, work together to get a handle on this. But as of now, we are still far away from seeing this.
