It was frightening to watch as Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Russell Gage was forced to leave Monday’s playoff game on a backboard in the wake of Damar Hamlin’s on-field medical incident just two weeks prior. Late in the fourth quarter of Tom Brady‘s humiliating loss to the Dallas Cowboys, Gage went down uncomfortably. When he didn’t get up right away, officials and medical workers rushed onto the field to see to him.
The 26-year-old wideout, who was severely injured to the head and neck during the play, lay motionless on the ground for a moment while Cowboys and Buccaneers players watched in concern.
Finally, Gage was secured to a backboard and transported immediately to the hospital. Todd Bowles, the head coach of the Buccaneers, stated that Tom Brady’s target had a concussion and was being examined for possible neck injury after the game. He wasn’t certain if Gage’s extremities moved at all.

Hoping the injury is not serious
By video, no worry for paralysis
Also don't see how he was allowed to get up if spinal cord worry
Hope he is OK. pic.twitter.com/aMfx5v8doy— David J. Chao – ProFootballDoc (@ProFootballDoc) January 17, 2023
Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Russell Gage Rushed To Hospital After TERRIFYING Hit
When he was down there, “His fingers were moving when he was down there. I don’t know about the rest,” Bowles said. Just 14 days prior to the horrifying incident, Hamlin was removed from the field in an ambulance following a comparable situation on Monday Night Football.
Thankfully, Hamlin has made significant progress since the crisis to recover. Now we’re all hoping Gage gets similar outcomes.
UPDATE
Russell Gage has movement in all of his extremities, the Buccaneers reported in a Tuesday morning update on his status. He will, however, stay in the hospital for additional tests, according to the team. The group stated, “We will provide additional information as it becomes available.”
