Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner have been trying to settle their divorce and custody battle, and the drama is becoming more intense by the day.
Sophie and Joe have a prenup, which states that they are to settle their divorce disputes through mediation.
The first day of mediation was eight hours long. It’s going to take a lot out of both of them. The two of them have been trying to agree on a parenting plan.
Sophie has been staying at Taylor Swift’s apartment in New York City while this is all being hashed out. She wanted to take their daughters, Delphine and Willa, and flee to England, but Jonas stopped that from happening.
Mediation Has Begun for Joe and Sophie
Sophie wants the case to go to the UK and file legal documents to make that happen. Jonas wants his children to remain in the US, where he lives, and there is a significant disagreement over the proposed jurisdiction of the case.
In Sophie’s lawsuit, she included a letter proving that Joe agreed to move the family to England so their kids could return to their “forever home.”
Jonas is currently working to try to get joint custody of his children. Sophie’s lawyer said they would go “full hog” to resolve the issue.
Jonas is on tour with his band, The Jonas Brothers, and Sophie’s lawyer wanted the trial to occur this year because the kids are still very young.
Jonas’s lawyer insisted that the trial could not begin until Joe had a break in the tour. The agreed-upon date for trial was January 2nd of next year.
The trial is set to determine if Joe unlawfully kept their children in the US by withholding their passports.
Joe and Sophie Should Settle Their Disagreements Privately
The high-profile former couple is vested in working everything out in private mediation and avoiding a bitter trial.
L.A.-based family law specialist Steve Mindel says,
“Mediation is a way to make headlines disappear.”
At this point, Joe and Sophie have to sit down and decide, and the mediator will help them decide whether or not they want to be public with this.”
The lawyers also disagreed on how long the trial should take. Joe’s lawyer thought it would take more time, and there would be several important witnesses to testify on each parent’s behalf.
Since both parties are famous, settling this without any added publicity would be in their best interest.
The Mediation is ongoing, as not a lot has been decided yet. It would be great if the pair settled on a basic parenting plan, ideally lasting for the next three years.
Sophie took to social media this past weekend for the first time since announcing her split with Jonas. She took to Instagram stories and showed off her Taylor Swift friendship bracelet. It said, “fearless.”
She posted the Instagram story on Sunday. “Fearless” is a song by Taylor Swift from her second album. She released “Fearless,” Taylor’s edition of her re-recorded album version in 2021.
Taylor has been a good friend and a source of inspiration for the Game of Thrones actress since her split with Joe was confirmed.
