Talk show host Steve Harvey has spoken on how cancel culture made him abandon his career in stand-up comedy.

Steve Harvey Gives His Take On Cancel Culture-‘Political Correctness Has Killed Comedy’

The comedian may now be known for the variety of presenting rules that he has, but it was not always this way. In the early parts of his career, he was a mainstay on the comedy circuit prior to the man that we now know.

But given that the comedy circuit has now changed from what he had initially started with, it is clear that things are becoming more politically correct.

Comedians are having to second-guess their instincts by introducing material that caters towards inclusivity for fear that it could alienate people and thus lead to the end of their careers.

In an interview with Variety, Steve spoke on how his comedy career is unlikely to come back. He said: “The only way I can do one more special is if it’s at the end of my television career because it will end my television career.

“We’re in the cancel culture now. No stand-up that is sponsor-driven can say anything he wants to.” One comedian who has managed to push back against this has been none other than Dave Chappelle.

His Netflix show entitled ‘The Closer’ received a huge amount of backlash on the grounds that it was deemed to have jokes mocking members of the LGBTQ community.

Despite facing calls to have the show canceled, the very fact of the matter is that Dave was one of the few comedians who managed to stand strong in the face of such adversity. But that is not going to be the case for all comedians, though.

Steve added: “If I had tried to continue as a stand-up, there’s no way I could maintain it. Political correctness has killed comedy. Every joke you tell now, it hurts somebody’s feelings.”

Steve’s comedy career may be over, but luckily for him, he has managed to find himself an alternative career in the presenting world which would not always be available to aspiring comedians.

In that way, he has managed to find something good from something bad. If you liked reading this article, then check out our other features on the Daily Soap Dish.
