Steve Harwell did not want visitors when he was receiving hospice care, thus Smash Mouth members were not able to say their final goodbyes to him in person.

Steve requested seclusion in his dying days and did not want a big gathering at his home in Boise, Idaho, according to the manager of the rock band, Robert Hayes.

According to reports, Steve’s management, family, fiancée, and her family were the only people who were permitted to visit him as he lay dying.

Despite not making the cut, Steve’s bandmates were still friendly with him, according to their manager. Before he passed away, they mostly communicated by phone and exchanged prayers and well wishes.

Liver failure caused Steve to pass away on Monday. He had been receiving end-of-life care at home while in hospice, and over the weekend, doctors told him he just had a few days left to live.

Smash Mouth’s operations continue unabated despite Steve’s passing; according to reports, Zach Goode will replace him onstage. If Steve’s memorial falls on the day of a previously booked event, the band won’t postpone any of its shows.

With Steve Harwell gone, the band’s manager says “Steve’s legacy will live on through the music.” It will be interesting to see if Zach Goode will be able to hold a candle to Steve.

It will definitely be strange seeing someone else leading Smash Mouth, but this isn’t the first time this has ever happened in the music industry.

    Rest in peace, Steve Harwell.
