Will Smith could become the latest member to suffer from cancel culture after Netflix and Sony have decided to suspend some of his upcoming projects.

Slapgate: Will Smith Victim of Cancel Culture As Netflix And Sony Postpones Two Of His Projects Following Chris Rock Assault At Oscars

This news arrives on the back end of his highly-controversial slap of comedian Chris Rock at the recent Oscars awards. This was in response to the actor feeling outraged by the comedian’s decision to make a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair loss.

While Will has subsequently apologized for his behaviour, the very fact of the matter is that his brand could suffer as a result. Reports indicate that Netflix has delayed “Fast and Loose,” as the project’s director David Leitch recently pulled out. Meanwhile, Sony will also postpone a potential “Bad Boys 4,” film.

It is not exactly clear whether this is being postponed on a short-term basis, or if this will eventually lead to the project being canceled outright. In any event, things do not look good for the following reasons. First of all, it clearly demonstrates that public opinion is not on the side of Will.

As such, if this negative sentiment continues, then the chances of other networks following a similar policy are only going to increase. This is irrespective of the fact that Will has just won an Oscar for best actor in ‘King Richard.’

Secondly, networks may also have to consider another avenue. Is it worthwhile to continue working with Will, or should the actor be recast instead? This is a difficult decision either way, but will nevertheless have to be considered.

The response on social media was very mixed. Some people could not believe that Will was going to be cancelled over one incident, while others did not see this as a surprise given that his actions were broadcasted across the world.

One person wrote: “Yeah, no way he’s getting cancelled. He’s way too important to Hollywood. He’s really one of the few movie stars they have left.” Time will tell how things play out for Will, but given everything we have seen so far, things are not looking very good.
