Apparently, there are rules for one group of people and then there are rules for everyone else. And if there’s one person who is opening up about the matter, it’s Hollywood star Sienna Miller. The British-born actress opened up about “privilege and impunity” just as Prime Minister Boris Johnson is fined for having a party during the COVID-19 lockdown in early 2020. Here’s what you need to know.
Miller said “entitlement, privilege, and impunity” have become increasingly key issues in the current political climate, with Boris Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak having received police fines for Covid rule breaches.
Sienna Miller Opens Up About Growing Up With Privilege Amid British Political Scandal
The star – known for blockbusters like Alfie and American Sniper – told ITV News about her new project, and how its theme of political scandal unwittingly mirrors the row over lockdown-breaking Downing Street parties.
The actress is currently promoting Anatomy of a Scandal, which was adapted from Sarah Vaughan’s 2018 bestselling novel of the same name. She said the drama’s release was “perfect timing”, pointing to three political scandals from the past couple of years.
She said: “Pretty unethical behavior from some members of our government – whether that was breaking quarantine to drive up north or fumbling in corridors,” while also adding, “This week, the news is filled with the ramifications to that party. I think that entitlement, privilege, and impunity is in the forefront of people’s minds.”
Meanwhile, opposition parties have accused Johnson and Sunak of lying to the public about their attendance at the Downing Street gathering, with Labor leader Sir Keir Starmer and the first ministers of Scotland and Wales demanding they step down.
