Did Alec Baldwin just shoot himself in the foot? Well, it depends on who you ask. There are some legal experts that say the Hollywood actor should have never done all of the interviews he did soon after he allegedly shot and killed Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust back in 2021. Alec claims that he never pulled the trigger on the gun even though the gun that he was holding killed the young cinematographer. And now legal experts say that Alec is paying the price for his words. Here’s what you need to know.

In his first major interview following the tragedy, the actor said he did not pull the trigger of the gun he was holding and added that he has “no idea” how a live round had gotten onto the set of the low-budget film in New Mexico.

“He should never have spoken out after the incident,” said Susan M. Tellem, a senior partner at California-based firm Tellem Grody PR, told the Washington Post. “It set the stage for future legal problems, and here we are.”

David M. Schwartz, a partner at the New York- and D.C.-based law firm Gerstman Schwartz LLP also added, “His training has dictated that he would get out in front of this, would get his viewpoint out in the court of public opinion, would get out all his statements, his interviews, and show the world that this was just a horrible accident. In the world of court and criminal law, this is a real mistake.”

Hutchins, 42, was killed during filming in October when the revolver Alec Baldwin was holding fired a live round that struck her in the chest and lodged in the shoulder of director Joel Souza. Souza survived the gunshot wound. The forensic report obtained by ABC News states that accidental discharge testing determined that the firearm used in the shooting “could not be made to fire without a pull of the trigger”. This conclusion does not align with Baldwin’s previous statements regarding the tragedy.

Last year, it was reported that a New Mexico county sheriff released a video of Baldwin rehearsing with an old-west style revolver on the film’s set before the gun went off in his hand, killing Hutchins. Baldwin has been named in several lawsuits concerning Hutchins’ death, including one by her husband, Matthew. The 64-year-old actor has argued in court papers that an indemnification clause in his contract shields him from personal liability.
