Serena Williams has opened up on how marriage takes a lot of work, and hers is no exception.
Serena Williams Opens Up On The Difficulties Of Marriage
Serena is currently married to Alexis Ohanian, but it has not been all fun and games. In a Q&A on Bumble’s The Question Game, Serena revealed how marriages involve a lot of sacrifice. She said: “Marriage is not bliss. But it can be if you work at it. A dealbreaker for me in a relationship is definitely loyalty. Well, not having it, that is.”
And loyalty is a subject that Serena is all too aware of. Serena and Alexis came across each other while they were staying at the same hotel. As destiny would have it, they would go on to get married. The duo have been married since 2017 and have encountered many difficulties since then. After the birth of their daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr, Serena’s health took a turn for the worse.
She suffered from a pulmonary embolism, which kept her bedridden for a prolonged period. Not only that, Serena experienced postnatal depression. And yet, through it all, Alexis was by her side as time healed those wounds. She added: “Heartbreak is a part of life, whether it be a loved one, a boyfriend or an animal. But time heals all wounds.”
Through her children, Serena has found something else to devote her time towards. Despite being a tennis legend in her own right, retirement comes calling for the best of players. And with Serena not getting any younger, it may soon become a realistic possibility. But that impending void has been filled through motherhood.
She continued: “I learned that love is an amazing feeling. And if you have an opportunity to feel it, then it’s a special thing. I always knew I wanted kids. I never knew when but I always knew I wanted kids at some point.” So what is next for Serena? Well, she has already begun training her daughter on how to be a tennis player. And if she can be half as good as Serena, then we will surely have a star on our hands.
