Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a moderate Democrat known for her advocacy of progressive issues and who made history by breaking gender barriers in her extensive career in local and national politics, has passed away at the age of 90.

Feinstein, who was elected to the Senate in 1992 and represented California, breathed her last on Thursday evening at her residence in Washington, D.C., as confirmed by her office on Friday.

Throughout the day, heartfelt condolences and tributes poured in. On the Senate floor, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer began the day’s proceedings by announcing her passing, “As the nation mourns this tremendous loss, we know how many lives she impacted and how many glass ceilings she shattered along the way.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom will nominate an interim successor, setting the stage for a competitive battle to fill her vacant seat.

Feinstein, the longest-serving U.S. senator, was a strong advocate for progressive causes of significance to her state, including environmental preservation, reproductive rights, and gun control. She was also known for her practical approach, often bridging divides to collaborate with Republicans and seek bipartisan resolutions.

Her passing came after a period of illness earlier this year when she was sidelined for more than two months due to shingles. This hiatus sparked frustration among some of her more left-leaning critics and led to an unsuccessful Democratic attempt to temporarily replace her on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

When she returned to the Senate in May, she appeared frail, relying on a wheelchair, and participating in votes only on occasion.

On Friday, her Senate desk was draped in black, featuring a vase of white roses. Senators delivered heartfelt tributes, while members of the California House delegation stood at the rear of the chamber. In the gallery, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sat alongside Feinstein’s daughter, Katherine.

Joe Biden released a statement saying, “Dianne made her mark on everything from national security to the environment to protecting civil liberties. Our country will benefit from her legacy for generations.”
