Alec Baldwin’s gun shooting incident, which killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza, has led to a huge debate about the banning of guns on sets.

Alec Baldwin’s Gun Shooting Incident Sparks Debate About The Banning Of Guns On Set

According to reports, some of the biggest TV networks and studios have begun conversations over whether they would be willing to implement such a policy.

Although it would have the benefit of protecting actors, such a move would naturally hamper any stunt people’s career within the process. That is why there is no decision forthcoming.

And yet, shows which have a much smaller budget than the global movie projects have already started to make their voices heard. Alexi Hawley, who happens to be the creator of the show ‘The Rookie’, has called for a ban on live guns on the set.

In an interview with ‘The Hollywood Reporter‘, he said: “As of today, it is now policy on The Rookie that all gunfire on set will be with Air-Soft guns with CG muzzle flashes added in post.

“There will be no more ‘live’ weapons on the show. The safety of our cast and crew is too important. Any risk is too much risk.”

Naturally, some felt that this move would take away an element of realism from the audience. Having said all that, the emergence of CGI technology would allow any director to still get that authentic feeling without putting the safety of any crew members at risk.

Craig Zobel, who is the director of ‘Mare of Easttown’, has downplayed the significance of live ammunition. In a post to his fans on Twitter, he remarked: “There’s no reason to have guns loaded with blanks or anything on set anymore.

“Should just be fully outlawed. There’s computers now. The gunshots on Mare of Easttown are all digital. You can probably tell, but who cares? It’s an unnecessary risk.”

The decision over whether to ban guns is ultimately one that will require government intervention. There is a feeling that legislation would put an end to this once and for all.

Otherwise, we could have a situation where there are different standards on different sets. If you liked reading this article, then check out our other features on the Daily Soap Dish.
