Queen Elizabeth was allegedly furious that Harry and Meghan named their daughter Lilibet. Royal expert Richard Fitzwillams says,
“The monarch was as angry as I’d ever seen her.”
Fitzwillliams said that it was “despicable” for Harry and Meghan to “co-opt” the name in this way if they could not get the blessing of the Queen.
The Queen Was Angry Over the Couple Not Seeking Her Blessing or Permission
A royal staff member exclaimed that the Queen was
“as angry as I’d ever seen her at the way in which Harry and Meghan handled this.”
Lilibet was her childhood nickname used only by the Queen’s close family. Robert Hardman wrote the latest book, “Charles III: New King. New Court. The Inside Story.”
He says there was a row concerning Lilibet’s name. During the couple’s interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021, the couple said the Queen had given them her approval to use the name Lilibet for their little girl.
Harry and Meghan also made it a point to say they would take legal action against anyone who even inferred that they were not told that they could use the name.
When the Sussexes tried to get the royal palace to sign off on their version of events, the palace immediately rejected their request.
The exact wording the Queen used to respond to that infamous interview was, “Recollections may vary.” Her Majesty was none too pleased about Harry and Meghan’s bid for exposure at the cost of the royal family.
A source close to the royal family explains that Harry’s father, King Charles, tried to listen to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, but he has resolved to “Get on with his life” and give Harry the space he needs.
The Archewell announcement about the birth of Lilibet occurred in June 2021. It read, “Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty the Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet.”
Harry and Meghan Wanted to Take Legal Action
A source close to Harry and Meghan had this to say back then,
“The Duke spoke with his family in advance of the announcement; in fact, his grandmother was the first family member he called.”
The informant also alleged that if the Queen had not supported the couple‘s decision to use the name, they simply would not have used it.
Another source close to the royal family states that that isn’t true, and they did not ask permission from the Queen about naming their little girl Lilibet. The BBC followed up on the story.
The Sussexes accused the BBC of libel and told their lawyers to tell media outlets that their information was “false and defamatory.”
The Queen received this sweet nickname when she was a little girl because she could not pronounce the name Elizabeth. She was only addressed as Lilibet by King George VI, the Queen Mother, and her sibling, Princess Margaret.
Then, when she married her husband, Philip, he would affectionately call the Queen Lilibet. Interestingly, Harry did not discuss the row over the use of the name in his January 2023 memoir, “Spare.”
The source also claimed that the Queen had not been told of the name until after the baby was born. Harry and Meghan should have asked Her Majesty first.
