Robert Irwin, son of infamous ‘Croc Hunter’, Steve Irwin, who met an untimely death when he was only 44 years old via stingray, almost had a fatal run-in with a leucistic Crocodile named Casper at the Queensland Zoo in a clip posted to social media this week.
On the season finale episode of Crikey! It’s the Irwins!, Robert was helping Casper get adjusted to his new enclosure by holding out some food for him, they were testing to see whether or not the enclosure was comfortable enough for the animal.
Robert Irwin Almost Suffers The Same Fate As His Famous Father, Steve Irwin
Apparently, it was so comfortable he decided to take a run and go at Irwin, who had to flee for his life and tell the rest of the zookeepers to bail when the animal went for him! Robert Irwin is just 18 years old, the only son of Steve Irwin. Casper, the croc in question, is said to have been one of the most aggressive crocodiles the zoo has ever seen.
Casper is a leucistic crocodile, meaning that he has a lack of dark pigment which means he probably couldn’t survive in the wild, or at least he couldn’t survive very well. Nature is not kind to animals who don’t have natural camouflage.
Currently, Casper is housed with another leucistic croc, Wendy, but it looks like Wendy just has your normal levels of croc aggression, not Casper levels. Still, Irwin is quite lucky to have gotten off with just mental trauma. Back on Sept. 4th of 2006, his Father Steve Irwin was not so lucky when he met the business end of a stingray while filming a documentary.
Allegedly, there is footage of the ray striking Irwin, but of course, it was never (and will never) be released to the public. The family has since continued the work of Croc Hunter, with both children going into the field of animal conservation and reality TV. We wish Robert the best in all his endeavors and hope that he continues to cheat death, because hey, someone has to. Stay tuned!!!
