‘Real Housewives of Beverly Hills ‘spoilers find that Lisa Rinna is fighting back against the paps after being sued for posting photographs of herself to her Instagram.
Confused? We’ll explain.
It started back in June of this year, when the Days of Our Lives alum posted 8 photographs of herself and her daughters to her Instagram page. Unfortunately, even though the photos were of Lisa and her family, Rinna didn’t own the photos. The snaps belonged to photo agency Backgrid and they have filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against the reality star.
‘Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ Spoilers: Lisa Rinna Shocked by Paparazzi Lawsuit Filed Against Her
In the suit, Backgrid claims that Rinna posting the pics ruined their chances of selling the photos. Lisa has over 3 million Instagram followers who aren’t going to buy magazines to see pictures they’ve already seen on Insta.
Backgrid is asking that Lisa pay the company $1.2 million in lost revenue.
The Real Housewife is now speaking out against the lawsuit, telling the L.A. Times she was shocked that things turned so nasty. She claims to have always had a good relationship with the paparazzi.
It seems that relationship is souring, with Rinna filing her legal response against Backgrid. Her claim attests that the photo agency is asking for far too much money as the photos were of her and her daughters masked-up. She has also accused Backgrid of taking advantage of the Copyright Act and that they are attempting to “benefit from the exploitation of [her] images, while she allegedly remains unable to use these photographs for her own, personal purposes.”
The 58 year old soap star isn’t the first celeb to be sued for using someone else’s photos of themselves for personal use. Images snapped of celebrities without their consent are legally taken if they are taken in public and with the intent to use for editorial purposes. By law, the photographer or the agency owns the rights to the image.
Dua Lipa, Gigi Hadid, Justin Bieber, and Emily Ratajkowski have been hit with similar lawsuits. In Emily’s case, she posted a photo of herself taken by a paparazzo with her face covered by a bunch of flowers, to an Instagram Story that only stayed for 24 hours. The photographer in question, Robert O’Neil attempted to sue the model for $150,000.
The case, which began in 2019 is still going on with a split decision being handed down earlier this month, forcing both parties to return to the courts.
