Republican Madison Cawthorn Slammed For Calling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky A ‘Thug’
This statement was contrary to the narrative that has seen the Ukrainian President being praised, as a result of him standing up to Russian aggression on his country. After all, Zelensky was reportedly given the opportunity to leave the country but declined on the basis that he wanted to stay and fight.
Therefore, the last thing you would expect to see is a person in political office attacking the President. And yet, that is precisely what Madison did with his following comments.
In a statement, he said: “Remember that Zelensky is a thug. Remember that the Ukrainian government is incredibly corrupt, and it is incredibly evil, and it has been pushing woke ideologies.”
This received a lot of backlash from other members of Congress including those from the Republican Party. Senator Lindsey Graham distanced himself from the comments, despite him recently having made controversial ones himself by calling for the assassination of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Not only that, but Republican Joni Ernst wanted to highlight how Putin was the one that was responsible for the attack on Ukraine in the first place. As a result of the backlash, Madison had to clarify his comments.
Luke Ball, who happens to be a spokesperson for Madison, had this to say: “The Congressman was expressing his displeasure at how foreign leaders, including Zelensky, had recently used false propaganda to entice America into becoming involved in an overseas conflict. He supports Ukraine.”
The response on social media was full of outrage towards Madison. A significant majority of people felt that his comments were tone-deaf and out of touch. One person wrote: “This kid is the thug with his multiple sexual misconduct cases out there.”
Madison should have been more careful with his words, and given that public opinion is firmly in favour of Ukraine, it was not surprising to see that Madison’s comments stoked a lot of backlash.
