The American Criminal justice system has had enough, it would seem, and the scales of justice tipped in favor of R. Kelly’s accusers on Thursday, Feb. 23rd, 2023, when a federal judge handed down the 20 year sentence to the singer. The sentence is to be served concurrently, all but one year, with the 30 year sentence that he received in 2022 for sex trafficking and racketeering.
As we all know, or at least most of us should know by now that during the 90’s at the height of his fame, R. Kelly sexually abused his 14 year old cousin, along with other young, underage girls. It was kind of an open secret that R. Kelly “liked them young”.
R. Kelly gets 29 years in prison for sex crimes against children!
While most of the public turned a blind eye to his behavior int 90’s, when the #MeToo movement rolled around it was not so easy to hide and now with the heightened sense of what is and isn’t legal to do with children, Kelly’s time of getting away with his transgressions was up.
After a lot of exposes and controversy, R. Kelly was arrested in July of 2019. People were quick to wonder where the girls own parents were and why they were eager to foist their children off onto Kelly even though some argued that the parents knew what kind of a reputation he had, but indeed the 90’s were a different time in the American landscape and the parents themselves were close with Kelly, so they trusted him.
…much to the detriment of their children.
One of his victims, a woman simply known as Jane, stood up in court and said, “When your virginity is taken by a pedophile at 14… your life is never your own. I will never get back what I lost to Robert Kelly.” Yet another accuser, a woman known as Nia, also stood up and made it a point to address Kelly personally while on the stand. “Now you are here… because there is something wrong with you. No longer will you be able to harm children.” Powerful words. Stay tuned!!!
