Queen Elizabeth’s beloved husband, Prince Philip, has died at age 99, according to a new statement released by Buckingham Palace early on Friday morning. He was the first male royal consort since Queen Victoria’s time in the 1800s — and the longest-serving consort in British history.

As many royal fans know by now, Prince Philip recently spent four weeks in the hospital, which was his longest stay ever. He was transferred briefly in early March to a specialist cardiac center at another London hospital, where he underwent a successful procedure for a pre-existing heart condition.

The Palace said in a statement: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.”

The Palace said more announcements would be made and added: “The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Philip “earned the affection of generations here in Britain, across the Commonwealth and around the world.’

“Like the expert carriage driver that he was, he helped to steer the royal family and the monarchy so that it remains an institution indisputably vital to the balance and happiness of our national life.”

The prince married Princess Elizabeth in 1947, five years before she became Queen. They wed at Westminster Abbey in 1947 in a televised ceremony that transfixed millions of viewers around the world. It was the beginning of a long-lasting and successful royal marriage. He and the queen have four children, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

We will update you with all of the latest details as they come in.
