Queen Elizabeth once called 1992 “Annus Horribilis,” which means horrible year. It was this year that three out of four of her children divorced their spouses.
There was also the infamous toe-sucking scandal involving “Fergie” and a man that wasn’t Prince Andrew. The press was beyond humiliating, and it took the Queen all the strength she could muster to power through it.
A fire at Windsor Castle didn’t help, although, luckily, workers had removed most of the artwork from the walls in preparation for rewiring.
Queen Elizabeth Couldn’t Have Imagined A Year Like 2024
All that being said, Queen Elizabeth could never have envisioned 2024 as even more horrible than 1992 ever was.
At the heart of the monarchy is Prince William, who has had to shoulder the burden of not just his father, King Charles, finding out he has cancer but also his beloved wife, Kate Middleton, who bravely announced her cancer diagnosis on March 22nd.
He’s not only had to cope emotionally with the devastating double cancer diagnosis. William also had to take more responsibility as his father and wife recover.
The rift with his absent brother, Prince Harry, is ever-widening. The rift endures long after his tell-all memoir, “Spare,” was published.
William always appears to have it together. Unlike Harry, who views his own self-pity as an easy payday, William soldiers on as a son, husband, and father to his three beautiful children, Prince George, Prince Louis, and Princess Charlotte.
But William is still human. And he’s under immense pressure. While his royal duties are essential, his priority is his family.
One can only imagine how angry William must have been watching his wife get attacked over their family’s Mother’s Day photo because she did a little doctoring.
The speculation and conspiracy theories surrounding Kate’s health no doubt tested William’s patience and self-restraint.
William Has Had To Attend Royal Engagements Solo And Shoulder Responsibilities
Everyone demanded to know why Kate hadn’t been out in public since Christmas, as if the family owed a detailed explanation.
But no one knew at that point that Kate was cancer-stricken. His frustration with the press may have prompted him to take a cue from his grandmother: “Never complain. Never explain.” But eventually, Kate felt compelled to explain.
William also had to contend with attending royal engagements and performing public duties without his wife. Trooping the Color was a rare treat, and we got to see the lovely Kate at her best and brightest.
Besides that, William was solo at Windsor’s Garter parade, the wedding of the Duke of Westminster, and the memorial of his late godfather, King Constantine of Greece.
He filled in for his father at the D-day Commemoration for the 80th anniversary of D-day, which was an enormous undertaking, and he did very well.
Over the past few months, a slimmed-down monarchy has made for an enormous challenge. The glaring omission of Harry’s involvement is increasingly evident with Charles and Kate recovering from treatment, and now Princess Anne is hospitalized due to a concussion.
Even though William is heir to the throne, his most significant roles arguably include being Kate’s loving husband and a doting father to his three children.
