Maybe they should have just sat this one out and stayed home instead. There’s a new report that says Prince William and Kate Middleton were forced to cancel a visit to a farm for the start of their Caribbean tour after local residents protested and voiced their opposition to their trip.
William and Kate were due to tour a cacao farm during the first full day of their tour on Sunday, but the royal engagement was removed from the schedule because of the protest. Here’s what you need to know.
Prince William And Kate Middleton’s Tour To Belize Is Off To A Rough Start
According to reports, a protest was staged on Friday opposing the royal visit to Akte ‘il Ha cacao farm in Indian Creek village in the foothills of the Maya Mountains. The young royals are touring the Caribbean to mark Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee, which celebrates the monarch’s 70th year on the throne.
Village elders said they had not been consulted about the couple’s helicopter landing in a soccer field in their village, which is one of the many reasons why they are apparently upset.
That said, William and Kate’s week-long visit will see the couple learn about the impact of the COVID pandemic on communities and hear about projects working with young people and the environment.
“As with previous overseas visits, The Duke and Duchess have asked that this tour allows them to meet as many local people as possible. Over the course of their time in the Caribbean, Their Royal Highnesses will meet a wide variety of groups, including children, young people and families, frontline workers, service personnel, leaders from government, business and the charity sector as well as inspiring conservationists and early years professionals,” a Kensington Palace spokesperson said.
So far Buckingham Palace has not made any comments about the protests or William and Kate’s nixed farm visit.
