The British Royal Family normally doesn’t make any comments about the world of politics, so you know this is big if Prince Charles has felt compelled to say something. And say something, he surely did. The future king of England has condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “brutal aggression” in Ukraine. Here’s what he has to say.

While both the Cambridges and Sussexes have made their own statements regarding the situation in Ukraine, Prince Charles is the first member of the royal family to actually condemn Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. The prince called it “an attack on democracy” and said he was standing “in solidarity” with the people of Ukraine who are defending themselves against the Russian attack.

In a second statement, Charles had once again condemned the “truly terrible aggression” of President Putin’s invasion and he and the Duchess of Cornwall were visibly moved by stories they heard from Ukrainians living in London whose families are in Ukraine. This was when both Prince Charles and his wife Camilla Parker Bowles visited a Ukrainian Catholic Church in central London.

During their visit, children were carrying posters in the blue and yellow of the Ukrainian flag with the words “Stop Putin” and “Save Ukraine” written on them. Interestingly enough, a “Stop Putin” poster was handed to the Prince who held it until aides took it away.

As of press time, hundreds of people have gathered in protests across the UK, including in London and Manchester. In central London, demonstrators gathered in Trafalgar Square, carrying placards saying “Stop Putin” and “No to War”, while singing the Ukrainian national anthem among other protest chants.

The Central London demonstration began with a prayer led by Archbishop Claudio Gugerotti, the papal nuncio to Great Britain, who said: “Today we are all Ukrainians.”
